This class on federal filing status will help you review the guidelines and the requirements for determining a client's filing status. You'll understand who may use each designation, and the benefits and drawbacks of each.

We'll discuss the specifics of joint responsibility and community property under the status of married filing jointly, along with how to handle special circumstances where rules such as "innocent spouse relief" apply. We'll also look at the options when one spouse is a U.S. taxpayer, and one is a resident or nonresident alien.

As we discuss the married filing separately status, we'll discuss who can use this status, and some of the drawbacks of using it, including credits that the taxpayers will be ineligible for, or which will be reduced. We'll also talk about the issue of community property under this status.

We'll cover the requirements that must be met to use the Head of Household filing status, including what is included in "costs of keeping up a home", and who is considered a qualifying relative.

Finally, we'll look at the qualifications to file as a widow(er), the benefits offered by this status, and who it is most benefical for.

This course concludes with an IRS-mandated exam.
